Dr. Della Valle and Colleagues Win the “Best Poster Award” at the 30th AAHKS Annual Meeting in the Infection Clinical Category

Dr. Della Valle and colleagues were the 30th AAHKS Annual Meeting recipients of the “Best Poster Award” in the Infection Clinical Category.

About the Study:
When a total hip replacement gets infected, a temporary antibiotic cement spacer is used as part of a two-stage surgery, and the spacer can either immobilize the hip (“static”) or allow it to have motion (“articulating”). In this multi-center study, patients were randomized to one of the spacer types so that outcomes could be compared. Operative time was similar between the groups, but static spacers were associated with significantly longer hospital stays after surgery, and outcomes at an average of 3.2 years postoperatively generally favored articulating spacers.

“Two thumbs up” for Dr. Della Valle and staff after partial knee replacement

When Charles Rupert, 56, of Champaign decided to do something about his nagging knee pain, he assumed a total knee replacement was in his future. With two knee surgeries already under his belt, he was willing to do whatever it might take to be comfortable standing at work and fully active again.

Willing to travel for the best care, he researched joint replacement physicians in Chicago and found highly rated Dr. Craig Della Valle of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, also Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Chief of the Adult Reconstruction Service at Rush University Medical Center. Within days he had an appointment. “I wanted to be treated by the best in Chicago,” he says.

Telemedicine Allows Patients with Joint Pain to Receive Treatment Now

If you suffer from joint pain and are practicing social distancing, you don’t have to wait for an expert evaluation. While COVID-19 has altered how some healthcare is delivered right now, telemedicine has emerged as a convenient way to deliver excellent care.

Take Art Pech for example.

At 45, Pech was concerned about the knee pain keeping him from doing some of his favorite activities, including running, using elliptical equipment and rowing. He had scheduled an in-person appointment with Dr. Craig Della Valle, a joint replacement specialist at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, which was converted to a telemedicine appointment after the corona virus social distancing recommendations were announced. On the same date and time as his original appointment, but via computer screen, they discussed Pech’s imaging and his eventual treatment options, including a full or partial knee replacement.
