National Arthritis Awareness Month
In honor of National Arthritis Awareness Month, Dr. Della Valle would like to recognize anyone who has suffered from arthritis. He treats patients with hip and knee arthritis.
“The fun part of my job is seeing patients back soon after surgery and their pain is usually dramatically decreased or gone,” Dr. Della Valle says. “Many more people have heard the success stories of treatment and we have more and more patients coming in seeking relief. They are relieved to know that there are excellent, proven surgical options for arthritis affecting almost all parts of the body.”

Dr. Della Valle and Colleagues Win the “Best Poster Award” at the 30th AAHKS Annual Meeting in the Infection Clinical Category
Dr. Della Valle and colleagues were the 30th AAHKS Annual Meeting recipients of the “Best Poster Award” in the Infection Clinical Category.
About the Study:
When a total hip replacement gets infected, a temporary antibiotic cement spacer is used as part of a two-stage surgery, and the spacer can either immobilize the hip (“static”) or allow it to have motion (“articulating”). In this multi-center study, patients were randomized to one of the spacer types so that outcomes could be compared. Operative time was similar between the groups, but static spacers were associated with significantly longer hospital stays after surgery, and outcomes at an average of 3.2 years postoperatively generally favored articulating spacers.

Dr. Della Valle Featured in Orthopedics Today Article
Dr. Della Valle is featured in a recent article in Orthopedics Today entitled “Does 3D printing improve revision TJA planning and execution vs traditional methods?”. Dr. Della Valle and a colleague, Melvyn A. Harrington Jr., share their opinions on the necessity of using 3D printing for hip revision situations.
Dr. Della Valle says, “For planning, occasionally we used 3D printing to better understand a complex situation. That said, in most hip revision situations planning and execution are relatively straightforward and advanced technologies are not required.”
“Two thumbs up” for Dr. Della Valle and staff after partial knee replacement
When Charles Rupert, 56, of Champaign decided to do something about his nagging knee pain, he assumed a total knee replacement was in his future. With two knee surgeries already under his belt, he was willing to do whatever it might take to be comfortable standing at work and fully active again.
“I’m a big workout guy, usually in the gym three to four days a week,” he explains. “But for years, I’ve only been able to work out my upper body because of my knee pain. I just knew it was time.”
Willing to travel for the best care, he researched joint replacement physicians in Chicago and found highly rated Dr. Craig Della Valle of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, also Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Chief of the Adult Reconstruction Service at Rush University Medical Center. Within days he had an appointment. “I wanted to be treated by the best in Chicago,” he says.
