Dr. Della Valle Featured in U.S. News & World Report

Dr. Della Valle is featured in a new article in U.S. News & World Report. Entitled, “A New Hip or Knee Can Do a Marriage Good, Study Finds”, the article discusses the mobility and pain relief hip and knee surgeries provide.

Dr. Della Valle is quoted saying, “When you have pain every step that you take and you can’t put on your shoes and socks, and you can’t put on your pants by yourself and you’re struggling, it gives people this feeling of helplessness and they’re not under their own control and they get ornery. Not only does it hurt for some people with every step they take, there are some who have pain at rest as well.”

Telemedicine Allows Patients with Joint Pain to Receive Treatment Now

If you suffer from joint pain and are practicing social distancing, you don’t have to wait for an expert evaluation. While COVID-19 has altered how some healthcare is delivered right now, telemedicine has emerged as a convenient way to deliver excellent care.

Take Art Pech for example.

At 45, Pech was concerned about the knee pain keeping him from doing some of his favorite activities, including running, using elliptical equipment and rowing. He had scheduled an in-person appointment with Dr. Craig Della Valle, a joint replacement specialist at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, which was converted to a telemedicine appointment after the corona virus social distancing recommendations were announced. On the same date and time as his original appointment, but via computer screen, they discussed Pech’s imaging and his eventual treatment options, including a full or partial knee replacement.

Dr. Della Valle Quoted in OrthoSpineNews

Dr. Della Valle is quoted in a new article in OrthoSpineNews on the topic of insurance coding and reimbursement concerns, “High-volume total hip and knee surgeries are being placed on a ‘potentially misvalued codes list’ and I would say roughly half of our total joint colleagues are in the dark about this situation. The implications are grave as we are looking not only at big cuts in reimbursement, but the work units of one of the most successful operations in orthopedics are being devalued. We may end up in a situation where the reimbursement drops so low that many surgeons say, ‘This isn’t worth it. I quit.’ The highest volume surgeons are still going to do these surgeries, but not those who only do them occasionally—and with the aging population we cannot afford to lose any total joint surgeons. We must preserve the value of these codes.”
