About Anne DeBenedetti, BA

Anne has worked with Dr. Della Valle since 2008. In 2018, she was promoted to managing all the research with Dr. Della Valle and Dr. Denis Nam, overseeing and assisting the research fellow. Today, she is the Director of Research for the entire Adult Reconstruction section, working alongside the Fellows, Residents, Research Fellows, and all surgeons in the Adult Reconstruction section of Orthopedics.

2021-2022

The research fellowship with Dr. Della Valle and Dr. Nam at Midwest Orthopedics at Rush University Medical Center has been the most formative experience of my medical school education. While research fellowships are becoming more popular, this position remains unique in that it provides the opportunity to help manage over 15 randomized controlled trials, in addition to retrospective chart reviews. Because of this position, I have gained a much deeper understanding of the entire research process. I became more comfortable in IRB protocol writing, implementation of new randomized controlled trials, procurement of treatment and placebo medications, consenting patients for studies, patient follow-up, data analysis, and clear, effective writing for abstract and manuscript acceptances. The guidance provided by Dr. Della Valle, Dr. Nam, and the Adult Reconstruction Research Manager Ms. Anne DeBenedetti, MSc, will give you the tools and support to constantly improve these skills throughout the year. A few highlights of my research year include multiple podium presentation acceptances at regional and national conferences, four “Top 100” posters at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and first-author acceptance of “Short-Term Indwelling Foley Catheters Do Not Reduce the Risk of Postoperative Urinary Retention in Uncomplicated Primary THA and TKA: A Randomized Controlled Trial” to the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the premier, highly selective, orthopedic surgery journal.

Outside of research, Dr. Della Valle and Dr. Nam have been amazing mentors who are invested in my future career. This research position allows the opportunity to join Dr. Della Valle and Dr. Nam in the clinic and operating room, and the skills I learned prepared me to stand out and excel while on my Sub-Internship rotations. I am grateful for this opportunity and would highly recommend this research year position.
