JaeWon (Freddy) Yang
2019-2020
From retrospective studies to multi-center randomized controlled trials, Freddy helped lead and contribute to a variety of projects during his time as a research fellow. Freddy was the first author for “Microorganism-Directed Oral Antibiotics Reduce the Rate of Failure Secondary to Infection after Two-Stage Revision for Chronic Periprosthetic Joint Infection”, which was awarded the 2020 Knee Society Mark Coventry Award as one of the most influential papers in knee arthroplasty for that year.
Freddy appreciated all of the opportunities offered during his year and writes, “It was a tremendous honor to be Dr. Della Valle and Dr. Nam’s research fellow. My research fellowship year was by far my favorite and most educational year of my medical school experience, as I had the opportunity to learn about orthopaedics and research from two of the most prolific and knowledgeable arthroplasty surgeons and the residents and fellows at Rush, who also took me under their wings. The time spent in the clinic and the operating room with Dr. Della Valle and Dr. Nam allowed me to excel in my sub-internships upon returning to medical school, and I feel confident that the fellowship equipped me with the skills and knowledge to succeed in any research setting. Lastly, and most importantly, I felt supported by Dr. Della Valle, Dr. Nam, and Anne DeBenedetti (Dr. Della Valle’s Director of Research) from day one. I was and still am extremely grateful for their continued mentorship and support. I could not have asked for better mentors and wholeheartedly recommend this fellowship.”
