Tyler Calkins

2017-18

Tyler came from the University of West Virginia, eager to gain research skills that would help him through the rest of his career. It was an invaluable experience that allowed him to work closely with other residents and the Adult Reconstruction Fellows. Tyler was our first research fellow to work closely with Dr. Nam, who we now share the research fellowship. During his year, he was extremely successful with the completion of many studies. Some of the highlights include giving a podium at AAHKS on a RCT for same day versus Postoperative Day 1 Physical Therapy in Primary TKAs, a RCT of 30 versus 90 postoperative opioid pills in primary THA and TKAs (which won 3 awards!), a randomized trial of dilute Betadine versus Normal Saline Lavage to reduce infection in aseptic revision TKA and THA and lastly, a randomized trial of 4 different TXA regimens in Revision TKA. The three awards won by the Opioid study included the AAHKS “James A. Rand Award,” the MAOA “Carl L. Nelson award” and the “Rush Surgical Society best paper award.” Additionally, the TXA in Rev TKA study won two awards; the Mark Coventry award from the Knee Society and the best poster award at MAOA. Again, these are just the ones that stand out from Tyler’s year and we look forward to his continued success!
