US News & World Report: Penicillin Misconceptions May Raise Post-Op Infection Risk
US News & World Report recently published an article entitled “Penicillin Misconceptions May Raise Post-Op Infection Risk”.
The article says, “Surgical patients who report having a penicillin allergy face a 50 percent higher risk for a post-op infection compared to patients who report no drug allergy, new research finds. Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital attributed the higher surgical-site infection rate to the use of alternative antibiotics.”
Patient Laura Parker Completes Iron Man
Congratulations to our patient Laura Parker who completed an Iron Man after we replaced her knee! Truly amazing! And yes, she walked the marathon part. No running allowed after a total knee!

“Thanks again for another successful resurfaced hip. I now have both hips resurfaced, and I feel almost at full strength after 8 months. My wife took a video of me running to first base tonight. Don’t pay attention to the terrible swing on that pitch, but instead on my legs moving pretty well to beat out the infield hit. I’d say not bad for a 49 year old with 2 metal hips! I also stole second base after that. I will definitely recommend you to any player who is told he needs hip surgery. Thank you for giving me my life back. I will be playing every year in the Roy Hobbs World Series down in Fort Myers, Florida at the end of October for 2 weeks thanks to you.”

New York Times Article on Joint Replacement
The New York Times recently published an article entitled “After Knee or Hip Replacement, No Place Like Home”. The article highlights the growing number of Americans who are opting for knee or hip replacement surgery.
The author, Jane E. Brody, says, “As someone who has had both knees replaced, I can attest to the vast improvement in quality of life the surgery bestowed. I can walk and cycle for miles and swim daily without pain, and I can sit through operas, plays and concerts without stiffness.”
Home Beats Rehab for Knee, Hip Replacement Recovery
The a recent study by past AAOS President William J. Hozack, MD and colleagues concluded that “patients who go straight home from the hospital following hip or knee replacement surgery recover as well as, or better than, those who first go to a rehabilitation center.”
Orthopedics Today: “Direct anterior, posterior approach yielded similar outcomes after THA”
Orthopedics Today recently published an article entitled, “Direct anterior, posterior approach yielded similar outcomes after THA”. The article describes how researchers found no differences in the dislocation rate between the direct anterior vs. posterior approach.
The article says, “Use of the direct anterior approach or posterior approach during total hip arthroplasty resulted in similar short-term outcomes and complications, according to results presented at the Current Concepts in Joint Replacement Spring Meeting.”
